1. Slip Knot: The First and Easiest Step of Crochet!

Slip knot is the first step of basic crochet stitches for beginners . This is the knot from where we start any project.

How to make a slip knot

  • Make a small loop of your yarn – i.e. fold the yarn in such a way that a loop is formed.
  • Now take out the working yarn from the middle of it,
  • Now pull it.

Your slip knot is ready. By doing this you will have a loop formed, in which you have to put your hook.

Tip for Beginners:

Don’t make the mistake of making the slip knot too tight as it becomes difficult to form chain.

2. What is Chain and how to make it?

Chain is the most basic and important stitch of crochet. By making chain, we prepare the foundation of crochet project. After slip knot, we start our crochet journey by making chain.

How to make chain:

  • Insert crochet hook in your slip knot.
  • Wrap yarn around your hook – this process is called yarn over.
  • Now pull the hook from that loop and make a new loop.
  • Keep making loops by yarn over in this way.

Make as many chain stitches as you need. Be careful not to make chain too tight, otherwise stitching further can be difficult. By making a chain, we create a line or foundation upon which we will create further crochet stitches.

Common Mistake:

Making the chain too tight makes it difficult to make further stitches, so use a relaxed grip.

Practice Challenge:

Practice making 20 chains, and try to make sure all of them are the same size.

3. What is a single crochet stitch and how to make it?

The single crochet stitch is a basic and versatile stitch of crochet. You can use it in many projects, including scarves, blankets, hats, and more. After making the chain, the single crochet stitch allows you to take your crochet work to the next level.

How to make a single crochet stitch:

  • First, insert the hook onto your foundation chain — usually the second chain from the hook (the other chain from the hook).
  • Insert the hook through the chain, then yarn over (wrap the yarn around the hook).
  • After yarning over, pull the hook out of the chain and bring the two loops onto the hook.
  • Then yarn over and pull both loops together with the hook to complete a stitch.
  • Repeat this process for each chain for the entire row. After completing a row, turn to start a new row and continue making a single crochet stitch in the same manner. Single crochet stitch is a little tight and thick, which gives strength to your project.

Tip for Beginners:

  • Don’t forget to make a turning chain after the row is complete, else your project will not turn out straight.
  • Now you have learnt how to make slip knot, chain and single crochet stitch! Improve your speed and consistency by practising them so that learning further stitches becomes easier.

Crochet is an art that takes both patience and creativity together. Once you start feeling comfortable with basic stitches, it becomes much easier for you to create new patterns and designs. Remember, every expert was once a beginner—just keep practicing, learn from your mistakes, and enjoy the joy of making something new with your hands. Now pick up the hook, grab the yarn, and begin your crochet journey!
