What is a Slip Stitch in Crochet?

Slip stitch is a super short and flat stitch. It’s usually not used to make fabric, but rather as a connector or finisher.

👉 This is what we call a “hidden hero” because its work mostly happens in the background – joining, decorating, or giving a smooth finish to projects.

Materials you will need

  • Crochet hook (5mm–6mm best for beginners)
  • Medium weight yarn (use light color so stitches are clearly visible)
  • Scissors

💡 Pro tip: Don’t start with dark yarn. It can be tough for beginners to see stitches.

Step by Step: How to Crochet Slip Stitch

Ready? Let’s learn the slip stitch.

  • Step 1: Insert the hook in the stitch or chain where you want to do the slip stitch.
  • Step 2: Yarn over (just one loop needs to be put on the hook).
  • Step 3: Pull the loop of the hook into the chain, now you have two loops on your hook.
  • Step 4: Pull the first loop into the second loop.

👉 And that’s it! A simple slip stitch is ready.

Uses of Slip Stitch

  • Joining rounds – like completing a granny square or circle.
  • Moving – Sometimes we need to go to the next corner without making an extra stitch.
  • Edging – for making neat borders of a blanket, scarf or coaster.
  • Decorative line – for creating a stylish line on the top of fabric.

Common Mistakes

  • Making the stitches too tight – result: difficult to remove the hook.
  • Skipping the stitch – the chain becomes uneven.
  • Oversizing – do not think of making the entire project with a slip stitch, otherwise the fabric will become stiff
