You’ll gain confidence in your crochet skills once you learn double crochet step by step. Let’s do a small double crochet stitch tutorial:
- Make a foundation chain (try 12–15 chains).
- Yarn over (wrap the yarn over the hook).
- Insert the hook in the 3rd chain.
- Yarn over and pull a loop (now there are 3 loops on the hook).
- Yarn over and pull through 2 loops (2 left).
- Then yarn over and pull through the last 2 loops.
That’s it! Your first double crochet stitch is complete. Now complete the row in this way and turn by making 3 chains for the next row.

Quick Projects You can Make with Double Crochet
Simple Scarves
A scarf is a beginner-friendly project that requires you to make just a few rows of double crochet. This project is fast to make and you get a lot of practice in maintaining even stitches and straight edges. Plus, it’s a little stylish, too — you can wear the results of your practice daily.
Baby Blankets
Double crochet is considered a fast crochet stitch for beginners, so it is perfect for making baby blankets. Rows grow quickly and you get a cozy, soft blanket that is also perfect for gifting. This project gives beginners patience and the feel of large projects without complex stitches.
Classic Granny Squares
One of the most iconic projects in crochet is granny squares – and these are made mainly from double crochet stitches. Making small squares is a great way to practice, and later you can join the squares to make blankets, bags or cushions. This project offers both variety and creativity.
Washcloths for Practice
A washcloth or dishcloth is a small, quick project that’s perfect for beginners. By using just a few rows of double crochet, you’ve created a functional piece that’s also useful around the home. The small size also gives you the confidence of a “finished project” instantly.
If you want to make quick projects like scarves or blankets, it’s important to learn double crochet early.
Common Double Crochet Mistakes (and How to Fix Them)
1. Uneven Edges
👉 Problem: Rows become slanted or zig-zag because you sometimes skip the first stitch or add an extra stitch.
✅ Fix: Always make chain 3 at the start of the row (this is the first double crochet count) and pay attention to the last stitch. Using stitch markers is helpful
2. Stitches Too Tight or Too Loose
👉 Problem: Sometimes the stitches are so tight that it becomes difficult to insert the hook, and sometimes they are so loose that big holes are created in the fabric.
✅ Fix: Practise yarn tension. Hold the hook relaxed and maintain consistent pressure. If it is becoming tight, try a hook one size bigger.
3. Confusing Stitch Count
👉 Problem: While finishing a row the count gets mismatched, due to which the project loses its shape.
✅ Fix: Count your stitches at the end of every row. If by mistake one stitch is more or less then correct it immediately instead of continuing.
4. Gaps at the Beginning of Rows
👉 Problem: There is a big gap at the start of the row where you make chain 3.
✅ Fix: Use chain 2 (sometimes this reduces the gap of chain 3), or count the turning chain as “not a stitch” and then double crochet directly into the first stitch.
